English Description In The Bottom:

English Summary:

We feel that here in Tokyo, there is a lot of intra-group socializing, but spaces to do inter-personal and interact and learn from with people from a different background is sorely lacking.
This project is therefore an attempt to create a space which can facilitate this, nestled in the downtown Tokyo neighborhood of Roppongi. The space will function as a gallery, a workshop space or a place to socialize - with the basis of all the content being providing chances for people to mingle, sometimes with other people, sometimes with a different and new perspectives.
Examples of future content involves workshops to help foreign students handle the Japanese employment system, events to spread awareness about LGBTQ issues and women’s empowerment. We hope to gain your support for this project and you may do so by supporting us by contributing some money to the project.
If you are interested, please do read below for the full story of why we are doing this and why we feel this is sorely lacking here in Tokyo.

So There’s This Thing Called Relational Mobility…

A sociological term, it refers to how easy it is for individuals to build (and unbuild) who they wish to form relationships with - be it familial, romantic or platonic.
In very layman terms, it also means how easy it is to meet with someone and just hit it off.

Whither Tokyo

Tokyo - the biggest metropolis of the world with 35 million people. The Shibuya crossing where people flood into each other. Parallel, curving around each other, maybe bumping but very rarely intersecting.
In 2018, a study by Thomson et. al placed Japan as the country with the lowest relational mobility among 39 countries surveyed. Tourists lost in translation - locals lost in anonymity?

Inclusion

Strong static social bonds benefit those who are already in them. Who loses though?
The “newcomers" - the foreign residents in Tokyo that now number 3% but which will definitely grow from now - rising to 10% among those in their 20s.
Minorities which make do with the links they have - though they may actually acceptance. Single moms, LGBTQ people, people who have disabilities, women in general.  Bottled-up creatives who have crazy ideas. Or anyone who thinks wants to explore more, and to meet more people. Minglers.

Carbon alone does not spark

We too are an odd bunch.
We have among us a Japanese national who spent his teenage years in the Philippines and whose first job was selling shrimp. A designer who spends her weekend researching what makes the perfect hot pot and who worked under a very famous mouse before. A Singaporean engineer who speaks 6 languages and sings Enka at Karaoke.
We know that typical socializing here in Tokyo, drinking parties come to mind, don’t necessarily serve our needs. And that how limited the alternatives are - places where we can actually find people to hit off with.

We believe we are not alone in thinking so.

And we also know that it is through bringing very different people together that we can learn. Sharing stories, expertise and imaginations we strengthen ourselves as individuals, our team and the work we do.

This project …

Is our attempt in creating a space for minglers - a space where people can come to be themselves and where people can hit it off and also learn from each other. Where differences can be celebrated instead of being used to divide.
It will serve sometimes as a gallery, sometimes as a workshop space and sometimes as a party space - the basis is this is a place where the under-served populations above can come and feel at home. It is also a space where people can broaden their perspectives and get to know each other organically. - away from the trappings of hierarchy and other societal burdens. Less intra-group, more inter-personal.

We - the former shrimp salesman, the Enka-Karokeing Singaporean and the hotpot hot-shot designer - through this project are inviting you to this community. Through your support we want to create this space for you, for us, for everyone.

Will you come and join us in mingling too?
