【English version below】

Save Sado`s Rabbit Temple! Let`s repair Chokokuji`s roof!

Sado Island`s Chôkokuji Temple was founded by the Buddhist scholar Kôbô Daishi (Kûkai) in 807 and is known for its free running rabbits. Since it`s this ancient it has quite deteriorated and one of the temple buildings wasn`t able to withstand when a typhoon hit the island in September 2018. Half of the roof got blown off.

As the temple doesn`t have the financial means to repair it, the head priest and I want to try to gather the necessary amount of 15.000.000 Yen (ca. 125.000 Euro) via crowdfunding.

Hello, my name is Natalie. I studied Japanese Studies at Free University Berlin and moved to Sado in October 2019 where I started working for Sado Tourism Association. Ever since I was a kid, I was fascinated by Europe’s ancient buildings and Asia`s temples/shrines. Whenever I am walking through castle ruins or on temple/shrine grounds, questions like “how many hundred years ago were these stairs built?” or “which historic figures were standing were I am standing right now?” are popping up in my head. Moreover, I love animals! I used to take care of my classes pet rabbit Max during the holidays in elementary school and had two pet rabbits myself at home. So, when I came to Sado and learned that Chôkokuji Temple is not only old but also has rabbits running around on its temple grounds, I was thrilled.

When I first visited the temple, I talked to the head priest, Tomita-San. He told me that it has a history of about 1200 years and that it was established by the Buddhist scholar Kûkai (Kôbô Daishi; 774 – 835). Kûkai introduced Shingon Buddhism from China to Japan, which eventually gathered a considerable following and became one of the major schools of Buddhism with its original base on Mount Kôya in Wakayama Prefecture. Chôkokuji Temple belongs to the Kôyasan branch. It was built based on the model of Nara`s Hasedera, using the same Chinese characters for its name just with a different reading. Chôkokuji Temple`s treasure, the Kannon with eleven faces, is said to have been carved by Kûkai himself.

Many historic personalities have visited Chôkokuji Temple. Among them was for example the eminent Noh playwright Zeami (1363 – 1443), who got exiled to Sado Island in 1434 for opposing Shôgun Ashikaga Yoshinori`s suggestions regarding the succession of the Noh troupe. Zeami mentioned Chôkokuji Temple in his “Kintôsho” (Writings on the Golden Island).

The headpriest, Tomita Hôgen, was born in 1940 and became Chôkokuji Temple`s 53rd head priest. Since it`s only him and his wife taking care of the large temple precincts, and they are growing old, it is quite a task. Furthermore, the tree peonies growing naturally on the temple grounds are used by the renowned Hokusetsu Brewery to make sake, which is why no herbicides are used to kill weeds. So, when Tomita-San had to think of a way to make up for the labor shortage, he “employed” rabbits to have them mow unwanted weeds thirteen years ago. Currently, there are about 140 rabbits on Chôkokuji Temple`s precincts. As a sign of gratitude for the cute little lawnmowers, he erected a Kannon-statue in the shape of a rabbit.

But, just like many other temples on Sado Island, it is exposed to harsh weather and deteriorates. The temple building in which the head priest lives is a registered cultural heritage but already in 2018, its roof got blown off by a typhoon and a large restoration is urgently needed. The temple has only 40 parishioners supporting it and it doesn`t receive any subsidiary aid from the government. Therefore, the temple does not have the financial means to have the roof repaired. Currently the roof is only protected against the weather by a plastic sheet.

Hearing this story, it is hard for me to just watch an ancient temple like this fall apart. That`s why I created this campaign in the hope of gathering the needed amount with your help - the power of the crowd.

For the reparation, the old grass thatching and the metal sheets, as well as the roof`s foundation have to be removed and reconstructed from scratch. The renovation is estimated to take three months and cost 15.000.000 Yen in total (ca. 125.000 Euro).

Please help us make the renovation of Chôkokuji`s roof possible.
